FIGHT: Swans players Brad Smith (centre) and David Nell fight for possession from an ANU player.THE Goulburn Swans had a challenging game against 2015 grand finalists ANU Griffins at Goodhew Park on Saturday.
They lost 9.15.69 to 6.10.46 against a side who did well in the AFL Canberra 3rd Grade competition last year.
Since going up a grade to the AFL ACT/NSW Competition, captain/ coach Heath Russell said that the boys were still adjusting to the quicker pace.
“We just need to fine tune our decision making as the season progresses and assess our skills a lot better,” he said.
“However I feel the defensive side of our game is still really good and we really need to focus on scoring more goals ourselves.”
Russell singled out players Mitch Chapman, Glen Currie and Sam Ash for their performances on the field on Saturday.
“These boys did really well out there and kept on going,” Russell said.
“The boys are starting to show a lot more commitment in this competition and I think they will only get better.”
However, the task won’t get any easier this weekend, when the Swans face 2015 third placed team ADFA at RMC this Saturday.
“The ADFA boys are pretty confident coming off their 140 point win against Belconnen last weekend,” Russell said.
“It’s going to be hard work, but hopefully we can get there.”
