LABOUR OF LOVE: Ruth Lee and Sheila Crump love volunteering their time delivery meals on wheels to Orange residents.Photo: JUDE KEOGH RUTH Lee and Sheila Crump have been delivering meals to Orange’s elderly, frail and people with disabilities for 40 years and they love it.

The women love the chance to catch up with each other, their clients and go home knowing they have made a difference in someone’s day.

“You feel really good when you go to a place where there is a lady who hasn’t seen anyone all day long and they wait for you,” Mrs Crump said.

The ladies not only ensure clients are well fed, yesterday’s meal was chicken casserole, but they are a safety measure for people who may not have anyone else in their lives.

By visiting those people, the women are able to check on anyone who is vulnerable to make sure they have not had an accident in the home or become unwell, or report it if that has happened.

“We also find out what they need and then we come back [to Orange Food Service] and tell them,” Mrs Lee said.

This next financial year’s Orange City Council budget has allocated funding for 16,000 meals to be handed out in Orange at Orange Food Service.

Community services make up around 12 per cent of council’s operational budget.

Orange City Council services committee chair, councillor Ron Gander said the budget demonstrates the partnerships between the three levels of government to deliver services to the community.

“The budget includes $412,000 from the NSW and federal governments to fund the meals on wheels program,” Cr Gander said.

“The people who receive the meals also contribute a payment set at a level they can afford.

“As well as government support, this important work couldn’t happen without the time and commitment of many volunteers.

“I know that volunteers say they personally receive as much from making these visits as the elderly people who get the meals.”

Cr Gander said the small contribution from clients adds $94,000 to council’s budget and allows it to break even.
