The hockey season will commence on April 30, with games played onSaturdays at the Greater Sports Ground.

Esperance Hockey Association president Matt Ryan said there is a lot of interest this season.

“We’ve got good numbers this year, everyone is keen to get out there again,” he said.

Mr Ryan said the lightening carnival provided a great start to the season.

Ryan thanked the dedicated committee members who helped make the event possible.

“We’ve got a great group of people that hold the association together,” Ryan said.

AsEsperance had expressed interest in the past the association finally received an invite to the exclusive carnival.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for the Esperance Hockey Association,” shesaid.

“The game is different to what is played in Esperance, only sixplayers were allowed on the three quartersized fields.

“The games were heavily reliant on fast running and quick passes.

“We played teams from Hong Kong, Great Britian, Singapore and from all over Australia.

“With 40 men’s teams and 24 women’s teams there were hockey players everywhere.

“Both teams played good strong games and while we didn’t win a lot we were competitive and kept the scoring opportunities restricted for our opposition too.

“In total the Dolphins played sevengames and the Kingfishers played sixgames.

Davies said throughout the carnival there was “fantastic team work and no player left anything in reserve”.
