Mrs Tapp-Coutts will unveil A Sunburnt Childhood, which shares her experiences growing up on the iconic Killarney station, at the Katherine Museum on April 22 and admitted she could not believe how successful it had been since its national release a month ago.

“It’s just been mind-blowing,” she said.

“The response to the book has been incredible.”

The book is now on its third print run and the self-effacing author said she still had to pinch herself when she saw it on shelves.

“It’s pretty amazing to walk into the biggest Dymocks in Sydney and see your book there with all the others on those big tables,” Mrs Tapp-Coutts said.

“I’m just blown away by the interest in the story and the fact that, I suppose, it is just a story about growing up on a cattle station.

“I think people are intrigued with the Territory story and the Territory, that’s what it is.”

The national tour included interviews with radio identities Richard Fidler and John Laws, but Mrs Tapp-Coutts said it had been the positive feedback from her mother, June Tapp, that reinforced how warmlyreaders had embraced her extremely personal story.

“Mum loves it,so that’s great,” she explained.

“She’s a pretty dynamic character, so you don’t want to be upsetting her.

“It was at the back of my mind that there’s a lot of myths around the whole Tappfamily, particularly the breakdown of the family, the alcoholism and the court case, so it was a good way to maybe put some of that straight.”

As the book continues to go from strength to strength in metropolitan areas, Mrs Tapp-Coutts said sharing her success with Katherinites on Friday would be fitting.

“I’mreally excited about this week,” she said.

“It’s bringing it home and I think it’s definitely a Katherine story as well.”
