DRIVE THROUGH COFFEE: A Ford Territory smashed through APCO IGA Express on Mate Street on Wednesday morning.
A FORD Territory driver gave a new meaning to ‘drive through coffee’ on Wednesday morning after crashing into a coffee machine.
ANorth Albury baristawas almost hit by the machine after the vehiclesmashed through two panes of window at APCO IGA Express on Mate Street about 3.50am.
A staff member and delivery driver were the only people in the service station at the time of the accident.
No one was injured.
Owner Paul Armstrong said he believes the man who was driving may have accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake.
“I was still asleep whenthe phone rang, Ithought ‘what is this’,” he said.
“I’ve answered it and heard a car had driven through the front window and hit the coffee machine.
“My first thought was thecoffee machine is sixmetresinto the shop, that’s a fair effort.
“It was a very interesting way to start the morning to say the least.
“Adelivery driver just about walked into it and a staff member was on the other side of the kitchen door, the car would have missed him by about 15 centimetres.
“The driver was shaken, an ambulance came and looked him over, he was OK.”
The car was filled up at bowser five before slowly driving forward to a parking spot.
It suddenly accelerated through the window and into the coffee bench.
Albury police said the drivers thong got caught causing the crash.
The 49-year-old waswanted by police on a breach of apprehended violence order and was arrested at the scene.
Tradesmen filled the shop later in the morning to assess the damage, which included broken chairs, tables and holes in the walls.
Mr Armstrong said the cost could be anywhere up to $20,000.
“We wereunable to sell coffee for four hours in the morning and wehad trades in toreconnectwater and electricity,” he said.
“We have had a new front to the coffee bench put in.
“We are hoping to have the glass reinstalled today, butcabinets and bench tops could be another three to fourweeks.”
