The group informscouncil about tourismdevelopment and opportunities in the municipality across business, industry, arts, culture, conferencing, retail, sports and health sectors.

Council’s economic and business development managerColin Kemp said the committee’s main role was toidentify effective tourism marketingopportunities, to increase visitors to Horsham and surrounds.

“Visitors who are likely to stay overnight or longer leads to greater economic benefits, investment and business attraction, and longer-term economic stability,” he said.

Mr Kemp said the committee aimed toincrease visitation, economic growth and sustainability through supportingevents, regional marketing, conferencing and offering customer service for visitors andbusinesses.

Committee memberMurray Wilson said he joined toprovide new tourism ideas for the municipality.

“There are a lot of opportunities that are not promoted and I want to be a part of the group that can work with these challenges andsupport new ways to increase tourism in the region,” he said.

“New applicants have the chance to bring other opportunities to the table that are out there and not being embraced.”

Fellow member John Priestley said the region’scommercial industry wasquiet, and tourism increases would help this.

“We need new members to bring fresh ideas and input into the process,” he said.

The committee has seven positions available.

Mr Kemp said council would appoint people after an expressions of interest period.

He said members wereappointed for two years and met on the second Tuesday of each month at council offices in Horsham.

Applications close on June 3.
